At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
