Users Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs must be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have come off the jabs report a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
